There is a unique method to keep some consistency when using a character, and then have them switch up their custom offsets to create a similar yet different character.
In this guide, you can make a character have their gender switchable.
When creating a character who is going to have the possibility of having their gender edited, you first want to create the character as close to what you want using purely FVNE. Have the Head, Limbs and Gender selected. When the base character is ready, export the custom offset of the character using the same Head and Limbs etc but as both Female and (or) Male.
For the purposes of this guide, we are only focusing on the Gender switching.
Open up a custom offset and make your edits.
You will want to create shapes that allow you to shape the character further in FVNE that have no prefixes. Its purely a name that you give it. These shapes will appear in the Character editor within Custom Offsets as different sliders. For the purposes of this guide, you will want to create a bunch of general shapes, and some gender exclusive shapes. Whatever it is, add any new shapes that you want, and obviously fix the main shape however you want.
How or what magnitude the shapes affect your character is up to you. My decisions bring me to make lots of small shapes, such as shapes for the eyebrows and how firm they look, or stronger jaw, rounder head, bloated face etc so that Later, I can have multiple characters use that same custom offset but look different. (Given that they use the same Head, limb and gender selected.)
The main drawback behind this method is that you have to do double the Custom Offset work for both versions of your character.
But only for the 2 Custom Offsets.
Do not forget to save each Custom Offset file as a blender file for potential future edits.
Lets say, that both of these Custom Offsets are a Male variant and a Female variant. We are then dealing with 2 custom offsets.
When you apply the correct custom offset to the correct Gender, everything will be fine.
But to switch to the other, you must do the following:
Lets say, you are done making the female character and have her saved. You now want the Male variant.
That is about it!
You will notice how the character retains all of the texture work from the other variant, making editing your next character variant much faster and easier. Allowing you to create a race of characters with ease. There are many options within FVNE such as inflation sliders and Bone editing to allow sizing and body changes to make a variety.
An example that was achieved with One Character, 2 Custom offsets. All textures and masks are shared so making any character past the first one gets very simple.
